It may spread to the feet or hands and cause burning, freezing, throbbing and/or shooting pain that is often worse at night.   It is often associated with diabetes, alcohol abuse, vitamin deficiencies, immune system disorders, such as Lyme disease, shingles and HIV/AIDS, genetic disorders and is a common side effect of certain cancer drugs.  For many over the age of 60 there are unknown causes.
