Back to Antidepressants (as pain relievers) | Back to Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)
Duloxetine (Cymbalta®)
Duloxetine (Cymbalta®), a new type of antidepressant, was approved by the FDA in 2004 for the treatment
of pain associated with diabetic neuropathy in adults. Although
Cymbalta® does not change the underlying nerve damage, it might help
reduce pain. Research suggests that increasing the levels of serotonin
and norepinephrine, two naturally occurring chemicals in the central
nervous system, helps the body regulate pain caused by diabetic neuropathy.
